           Butthiscalmforthoughtnevercame;everytimethethoughtroseofwhatshehaddoneandwhatwouldhappentoher,andwhatsheoughttodo,ahorrorcameoverherandshedrovethosethoughtsaway.

           Butindreams,whenshehadnocontroloverherthoughts,herpositionpresenteditselftoherinallitshideousnakedness.Onedreamhauntedheralmosteverynight.Shedreamedthatbothwereherhusbandsatonce,thatbothwerelavishingcaressesonher.AlexeyAlexandrovitchwasweeping,kissingherhands,andsaying,“Howhappywearenow!”AndAlexeyVronskywastheretoo,andhetoowasherhusband.Andshewasmarvelingthatithadonceseemedimpossibletoher,wasexplainingtothem,laughing,thatthiswaseversomuchsimpler,andthatnowbothofthemwerehappyandcontented.Butthisdreamweighedonherlikeanightmare,andsheawokefromitinterror.
