           “Thentheyoughttofindouthowtovaccinateforlove,likesmallpox.”

           “‘It’snevertoolatetomend.’”TheattachérepeatedtheEnglishproverb.

           “Justso,”Betsyagreed;“onemustmakemistakesandcorrectthem.Whatdoyouthinkaboutit?”sheturnedtoAnna,who,withafaintlyperceptibleresolutesmileonherlips,waslisteninginsilencetotheconversation.

           “Ithink,”saidAnna,playingwiththegloveshehadtakenoff,“Ithink...ofsomanymen,somanyminds,certainlysomanyhearts,somanykindsoflove.”

           VronskywasgazingatAnna,andwithafaintingheartwaitingforwhatshewouldsay.
