           Kittyhesitated;shewantedtosayfurtherthateversincethischangehadtakenplaceinher,StepanArkadyevitchhadbecomeinsufferablyrepulsivetoher,andthatshecouldnotseehimwithoutthegrossestandmosthideousconceptionsrisingbeforeherimagination.

           “Oh,well,everythingpresentsitselftome,inthecoarsest,mostloathsomelight,”shewenton.“That’smyillness.Perhapsitwillpassoff.”

           “Butyoumustn’tthinkaboutit.”

           “Ican’thelpit.I’mneverhappyexceptwiththechildrenatyourhouse.”

           “Whatapityyoucan’tbewithme!”

           “Oh,yes,I’mcoming.I’vehadscarlatina,andI’llpersuademammatoletme.”

           Kittyinsistedonhavingherway,andwenttostayathersister’sandnursedthechildrenallthroughthescarlatina,forscarlatinaitturnedouttobe.Thetwosistersbroughtallthesixchildrensuccessfullythroughit,butKittywasnobetterinhealth,andinLenttheShtcherbatskyswentabroad.
