           Sheseemedtobepullingherselftogetherforafewseconds,asthoughshedidnotknowwhereshewas,andwhatshewasdoing,andgettinguprapidly,shemovedtowardsthedoor.

           “Well,shelovesmychild,”hethought,noticingthechangeofherfaceatthechild’scry,“mychild:howcanshehateme?”

           “Dolly,onewordmore,”hesaid,followingher.

           “Ifyoucomenearme,Iwillcallintheservants,thechildren!Theymayallknowyouareascoundrel!Iamgoingawayatonce,andyoumayliveherewithyourmistress!”

           Andshewentout,slammingthedoor.

           StepanArkadyevitchsighed,wipedhisface,andwithasubduedtreadwalkedoutoftheroom.“Matveysaysshewillcomeround;buthow?Idon’tseetheleastchanceofit.Ah,oh,howhorribleitis!Andhowvulgarlysheshouted,”hesaidtohimself,rememberinghershriekandthewords“scoundrel”and“mistress.”“Andverylikelythemaidswerelistening!Horriblyvulgar!horrible!”StepanArkadyevitchstoodafewsecondsalone,wipedhisface,squaredhischest,andwalkedoutoftheroom.

           ItwasFriday,andinthedining-roomtheGermanwatchmakerwaswindinguptheclock.StepanArkadyevitchrememberedhisjokeaboutthispunctual,baldwatchmaker,“thattheGermanwaswoundupforawholelifetimehimself,towindupwatches,”andhesmiled.
