           Itwasagainthatexpressionofreverentialecstasywhichhadsoworkeduponherthedaybefore.Morethanonceshehadtoldherselfduringthepastfewdays,andagainonlyafewmomentsbefore,thatVronskywasforheronlyoneofthehundredsofyoungmen,foreverexactlythesame,thataremeteverywhere,thatshewouldneverallowherselftobestowathoughtuponhim.Butnowatthefirstinstantofmeetinghim,shewasseizedbyafeelingofjoyfulpride.Shehadnoneedtoaskwhyhehadcome.Sheknewascertainlyasifhehadtoldherthathewasheretobewhereshewas.

           “Ididn’tknowyouweregoing.Whatareyoucomingfor?”shesaid,lettingfallthehandwithwhichshehadgraspedthedoorpost.Andirrepressibledelightandeagernessshoneinherface.

           “WhatamIcomingfor?”herepeated,lookingstraightintohereyes.“YouknowthatIhavecometobewhereyouare,”hesaid;“Ican’thelpit.”

           Atthatmomentthewind,asitwere,surmountingallobstacles,sentthesnowflyingfromthecarriageroofs,andclankedsomesheetofironithadtornoff,whilethehoarsewhistleoftheengineroaredinfront,plaintivelyandgloomily.Alltheawfulnessofthestormseemedtohermoresplendidnow.Hehadsaidwhathersoullongedtohear,thoughshefeareditwithherreason.Shemadenoanswer,andinherfacehesawconflict.

           “Forgiveme,ifyoudislikewhatIsaid,”hesaidhumbly.

           Hehadspokencourteously,deferentially,yetsofirmly,sostubbornly,thatforalongwhileshecouldmakenoanswer.
