           “Here,bringthelight,Fyodor,thisway,”saidLevin,examiningthecalf.“Likethemother!thoughthecolortakesafterthefather;butthat’snothing.Verygood.Longandbroadinthehaunch.VassilyFedorovitch,isn’tshesplendid?”hesaidtothebailiff,quiteforgivinghimforthebuckwheatundertheinfluenceofhisdelightinthecalf.

           “Howcouldshefailtobe?Oh,Semyonthecontractorcamethedayafteryouleft.Youmustsettlewithhim,KonstantinDmitrievitch,”saidthebailiff.“Ididinformyouaboutthemachine.”

           ThisquestionwasenoughtotakeLevinbacktoallthedetailsofhisworkontheestate,whichwasonalargescale,andcomplicated.Hewentstraightfromthecowhousetothecountinghouse,andafteralittleconversationwiththebailiffandSemyonthecontractor,hewentbacktothehouseandstraightupstairstothedrawing-room.
