           Andwiththeinabilitytoexpresshimself,theincoherencethatKonstantinknewsowell,hebegan,withanotherlookroundateveryone,totellhisbrotherKritsky’sstory:howhehadbeenexpelledfromtheuniversityforstartingabenefitsocietyforthepoorstudentsandSundayschools;andhowhehadafterwardsbeenateacherinapeasantschool,andhowhehadbeendrivenoutofthattoo,andhadafterwardsbeencondemnedforsomething.

           “You’reoftheKievuniversity?”saidKonstantinLevintoKritsky,tobreaktheawkwardsilencethatfollowed.

           “Yes,IwasofKiev,”Kritskyrepliedangrily,hisfacedarkening.

           “Andthiswoman,”NikolayLevininterruptedhim,pointingtoher,“isthepartnerofmylife,MaryaNikolaevna.Itookheroutofabadhouse,”andhejerkedhisnecksayingthis;“butIloveherandrespecther,andanyonewhowantstoknowme,”headded,raisinghisvoiceandknittinghisbrows,“Ibegtoloveherandrespecther.She’sjustthesameasmywife,justthesame.Sonowyouknowwhomyou’vetodowith.Andifyouthinkyou’reloweringyourself,well,here’sthefloor,there’sthedoor.”

           Andagainhiseyestraveledinquiringlyoverallofthem.

           “WhyIshouldbeloweringmyself,Idon’tunderstand.”

           “Then,Masha,tellthemtobringsupper;threeportions,spiritsandwine....No,waitaminute....No,itdoesn’tmatter....Goalong.”
