           AlthoughhehadbeenmuchinterestedbySergeyIvanovitch’sviewsofthenewepochinhistorythatwouldbecreatedbytheemancipationoffortymillionsofmenofSlavonicraceactingwithRussia,aconceptionquitenewtohim,andalthoughhewasdisturbedbyuneasywonderatbeingsentforbyKitty,assoonashecameoutofthedrawing-roomandwasalone,hismindrevertedatoncetothethoughtsofthemorning.AndallthetheoriesofthesignificanceoftheSlavelementinthehistoryoftheworldseemedtohimsotrivialcomparedwithwhatwaspassinginhisownsoul,thatheinstantlyforgotitallanddroppedbackintothesameframeofmindthathehadbeeninthatmorning.

           Hedidnot,ashehaddoneatothertimes,recallthewholetrainofthoughtthathedidnotneed.Hefellbackatonceintothefeelingwhichhadguidedhim,whichwasconnectedwiththosethoughts,andhefoundthatfeelinginhissoulevenstrongerandmoredefinitethanbefore.Hedidnot,ashehadhadtodowithpreviousattemptstofindcomfortingarguments,needtoreviveawholechainofthoughttofindthefeeling.Now,onthecontrary,thefeelingofjoyandpeacewaskeenerthanever,andthoughtcouldnotkeeppacewithfeeling.
