           Whatpuzzledanddistractedhimaboveeverythingwasthatthemajorityofmenofhisageandcirclehad,likehim,exchangedtheiroldbeliefsforthesamenewconvictions,andyetsawnothingtolamentinthis,andwereperfectlysatisfiedandserene.Sothat,apartfromtheprincipalquestion,Levinwastorturedbyotherquestionstoo.Werethesepeoplesincere?heaskedhimself,orweretheyplayingapart?orwasitthattheyunderstoodtheanswerssciencegavetotheseproblemsinsomedifferent,clearersensethanhedid?Andheassiduouslystudiedboththesemen’sopinionsandthebookswhichtreatedofthesescientificexplanations.
