           TheFrenchmanwasasleep,orpretendingtobeasleep,withhisheadonthebackofhischair,andhismoisthand,asitlayonhisknee,madefaintmovements,asthoughtryingtocatchsomething.AlexeyAlexandrovitchgotup,triedtomovecarefully,butstumbledagainstthetable,wentupandlaidhishandintheFrenchman’shand.StepanArkadyevitchgotuptoo,andopeninghiseyeswide,tryingtowakehimselfupifhewereasleep,helookedfirstatoneandthenattheother.Itwasallreal.StepanArkadyevitchfeltthathisheadwasgettingworseandworse.

           “Quelapersonnequiestarrivéeladernière,cellequidemande,qu’ellesorte!Qu’ellesorte!”articulatedtheFrenchman,withoutopeninghiseyes.
