           Thoughhethoughtherstillnesssuspicious,asthoughshewereholdingherbreath,andstillmoresuspicioustheexpressionofpeculiartendernessandexcitementwithwhich,asshecamefrombehindthescreen,shesaid“nothing,”hewassosleepythathefellasleepatonce.Onlylaterherememberedthestillnessofherbreathing,andunderstoodallthatmusthavebeenpassinginhersweet,preciousheartwhileshelaybesidehim,notstirring,inanticipationofthegreatesteventinawoman’slife.Atseveno’clockhewaswakedbythetouchofherhandonhisshoulder,andagentlewhisper.Sheseemedstrugglingbetweenregretatwakinghim,andthedesiretotalktohim.

           “Kostya,don’tbefrightened.It’sallright.ButIfancy....WeoughttosendforLizavetaPetrovna.”

           Thecandlewaslightedagain.Shewassittingupinbed,holdingsomeknitting,whichshehadbeenbusyuponduringthelastfewdays.

           “Please,don’tbefrightened,it’sallright.I’mnotabitafraid,”shesaid,seeinghisscaredface,andshepressedhishandtoherbosomandthentoherlips.

           Hehurriedlyjumpedup,hardlyawake,andkepthiseyesfixedonher,asheputonhisdressinggown;thenhestopped,stilllookingather.Hehadtogo,buthecouldnottearhimselffromhereyes.Hethoughthelovedherface,knewherexpression,hereyes,butneverhadheseenitlikethis.Howhatefulandhorribleheseemedtohimself,thinkingofthedistresshehadcausedheryesterday.Herflushedface,fringedwithsoftcurlinghairunderhernightcap,wasradiantwithjoyandcourage.
