           Passingthroughtheouterhall,dividedupbyscreens,andtheroompartitionedontheright,whereamansitsatthefruitbuffet,Levinovertookanoldmanwalkingslowlyin,andenteredthedining-roomfullofnoiseandpeople.

           Hewalkedalongthetables,almostallfull,andlookedatthevisitors.Hesawpeopleofallsorts,oldandyoung;someheknewalittle,someintimatefriends.Therewasnotasinglecrossorworried-lookingface.Allseemedtohavelefttheircaresandanxietiesintheporter’sroomwiththeirhats,andwerealldeliberatelygettingreadytoenjoythematerialblessingsoflife.SviazhskywashereandShtcherbatsky,Nevyedovskyandtheoldprince,andVronskyandSergeyIvanovitch.

           “Ah!whyareyoulate?”theprincesaidsmiling,andgivinghimhishandoverhisownshoulder.“How’sKitty?”headded,smoothingoutthenapkinhehadtuckedinathiswaistcoatbuttons.

           “Allright;theyarediningathome,allthethreeofthem.”

           “Levin,thisway!”agood-naturedvoiceshoutedalittlefartheron.ItwasTurovtsin.Hewassittingwithayoungofficer,andbesidethemweretwochairsturnedupsidedown.Levingladlywentuptothem.Hehadalwayslikedthegood-heartedrake,Turovtsinhewasassociatedinhismindwithmemoriesofhiscourtshipandatthatmoment,afterthestrainofintellectualconversation,thesightofTurovtsin’sgood-naturedfacewasparticularlywelcome.
