           LevinflushedagreatdealmorethanshewhenshetoldhimshehadmetVronskyatPrincessMaryaBorissovna’s.Itwasveryhardforhertotellhimthis,butstillhardertogoonspeakingofthedetailsofthemeeting,ashedidnotquestionher,butsimplygazedatherwithafrown.

           “Iamverysorryyouweren’tthere,”shesaid.“Notthatyouweren’tintheroom...Icouldn’thavebeensonaturalinyourpresence...Iamblushingnowmuchmore,much,muchmore,”shesaid,blushingtillthetearscameintohereyes.“Butthatyoucouldn’tseethroughacrack.”

           ThetruthfuleyestoldLevinthatshewassatisfiedwithherself,andinspiteofherblushinghewasquicklyreassuredandbeganquestioningher,whichwasallshewanted.Whenhehadheardeverything,eventothedetailthatforthefirstsecondshecouldnothelpflushing,butthatafterwardsshewasjustasdirectandasmuchathereaseaswithanychanceacquaintance,Levinwasquitehappyagainandsaidhewasgladofit,andwouldnotnowbehaveasstupidlyashehaddoneattheelection,butwouldtrythefirsttimehemetVronskytobeasfriendlyaspossible.

           “It’ssowretchedtofeelthatthere’samanalmostanenemywhomit’spainfultomeet,”saidLevin.“I’mvery,veryglad.”
