           “YouhavesomuchinfluencewithAnna,sheissofondofyou,”hesaid;“dohelpme.”

           DaryaAlexandrovnalookedwithtimidinquiryintohisenergeticface,whichunderthelime-treeswascontinuallybeinglightedupinpatchesbythesunshine,andthenpassingintocompleteshadowagain.Shewaitedforhimtosaymore,buthewalkedinsilencebesideher,scratchingwithhiscaneinthegravel.

           “Youhavecometoseeus,you,theonlywomanofAnna’sformerfriendsIdon’tcountPrincessVarvarabutIknowthatyouhavedonethisnotbecauseyouregardourpositionasnormal,butbecause,understandingallthedifficultyoftheposition,youstillloveherandwanttobeahelptoher.HaveIunderstoodyourightly?”heasked,lookingroundather.

           “Oh,yes,”answeredDaryaAlexandrovna,puttingdownhersunshade,“but....”

           “Iunderstand,”saidDaryaAlexandrovna,involuntarilyadmiringthesincerityandfirmnesswithwhichhesaidthis.“Butjustbecauseyoufeelyourselfresponsible,youexaggerateit,Iamafraid,”shesaid.“Herpositionintheworldisdifficult,Icanwellunderstand.”
