           OnthegreatplainofTexas,aboutahundredmilessouthwardfromtheoldSpanishtownofSanAntoniodeBejar,thenoondaysunissheddinghisbeamsfromaskyofceruleanbrightness.Underthegoldenlightappearsagroupofobjects,butlittleinunisonwiththelandscapearoundthem:sincetheybetokenthepresenceofhumanbeings,inaspotwherethereisnosignofhumanhabitation.

           Theobjectsinquestionareeasilyidentifiedevenatagreatdistance.Theyarewaggons;eachcoveredwithitsribbedandroundedtiltofsnow-white"Osnaburgh."

           Therearetenofthemscarceenoughtoconstitutea"caravan"oftraders,noryeta"governmenttrain."Theyaremorelikelytheindividualpropertyofanemigrant;whohaslandeduponthecoast,andiswendinghiswaytooneofthelate-formedsettlementsontheLeona.

           Slowlycrawlingacrossthesavannah,itcouldscarcebetoldthattheyareinmotion;butfortheirrelative-position,inlongserriedline,indicatingtheorderofmarch.

           Thedarkbodiesbetweeneachtwodeclarethattheteamsareattached;andthattheyaremakingprogressisproved,bytheretreatingantelope,scaredfromitsnoondaysiesta,andthelong-shankedcurlew,risingwithascreechfromtheswardbothbirdandbeastwonderingatthestringofstrangebehemoths,thusinvadingtheirwildernessdomain.
