OnthegreatplainofTexas,aboutahundredmilessouthwardfromtheoldSpanishtownofSanAntoniodeBejar,thenoondaysunissheddinghisbeamsfromaskyofceruleanbrightness.Underthegoldenlightappearsagroupofobjects,butlittleinunisonwiththelandscapearoundthem:sincetheybetokenthepresenceofhumanbeings,inaspotwherethereisnosignofhumanhabitation.
Theobjectsinquestionareeasilyidentified—evenatagreatdistance.Theyarewaggons;eachcoveredwithitsribbedandroundedtiltofsnow-white"Osnaburgh."
Therearetenofthem—scarceenoughtoconstitutea"caravan"oftraders,noryeta"governmenttrain."Theyaremorelikelytheindividualpropertyofanemigrant;whohaslandeduponthecoast,andiswendinghiswaytooneofthelate-formedsettlementsontheLeona.
Slowlycrawlingacrossthesavannah,itcouldscarcebetoldthattheyareinmotion;butfortheirrelative-position,inlongserriedline,indicatingtheorderofmarch.
Thedarkbodiesbetweeneachtwodeclarethattheteamsareattached;andthattheyaremakingprogressisproved,bytheretreatingantelope,scaredfromitsnoondaysiesta,andthelong-shankedcurlew,risingwithascreechfromthesward—bothbirdandbeastwonderingatthestringofstrangebehemoths,thusinvadingtheirwildernessdomain.
Elsewhereupontheprairie,nomovementmaybedetected—eitherofbirdorquadruped.
