           ThecampaignagainsttheComanchesprovedoneoftheshortestlastingonlythreeorfourdays.ItwasdiscoveredthattheseIshmaelitesoftheWestdidnotmeanwaratleast,onagrandscale.Theirdescentuponthesettlementswasonlythefreakofsomeyoungfellows,abouttotakeouttheirdegreeasbraves,desirousofsignalisingtheeventby"raising"afewscalps,andcapturingsomehorsesandhornedcattle.

           ForaysofthiskindarenotunfrequentamongtheTexanIndians.Theyaremadeonprivateaccountoftenwithouttheknowledgeofthechief,oreldersofthetribejustasanambitiousyoungmid,orensign,maystealoffwithascoreofcompanionsfromsquadronorcamp,tocutoutanenemy’scraft,orcapturehispicketguard.ThesemaraudsareusuallymadebyyoungIndiansoutonahuntingparty,whowishtoreturnhomewithsomethingtoshowbesidesthespoilsofthechase;andthemajorityofthetribeisoftenignorantofthemtilllongaftertheevent.Otherwise,theymightbeinterdictedbytheelders;who,asageneralthing,areaversetosuchfilibusteringexpeditionsdeemingthemnotonlyimprudent,butofteninjurioustotheinterestsofthecommunity.Onlywhensuccessfularetheyapplauded.

           OnthepresentoccasionseveralyoungComancheshadtakenouttheirwar-diploma,bycarryingbackwiththemthescalpsofanumberofwhitewomenandboys.Thehorsesandhornedcattlewerealsocollected;butthese,beinglessconvenientoftransportthanthelightscalp-locks,hadbeenrecaptured.
