           Thesespinousformsofvegetation,thoughrepulsivetotheeyeoftheagriculturistasprovingtheuttersterilityofthesoilpresentanattractiveaspecttothebotanist,ortheloverofNature;especiallywhenthecereusunfoldsitshugewax-likeblossoms,ortheFouquierasplendensovertopsthesurroundingshrubberywithitsspikeofresplendentflowers,likearedflaghangingunfoldedalongitsstaff.
