Insomeplacesthesetimberedtractsassumetheaspectofthetruechapparal—athicket,ratherthanaforest—itsprincipalgrowthbeingvariouskindsofacacia,associatedwithcopaivaandcreosotetrees,withwildaloes,witheccentricshapesofcereus,cactus,andarborescentyucca.
Thesespinousformsofvegetation,thoughrepulsivetotheeyeoftheagriculturist—asprovingtheuttersterilityofthesoil—presentanattractiveaspecttothebotanist,ortheloverofNature;especiallywhenthecereusunfoldsitshugewax-likeblossoms,ortheFouquierasplendensovertopsthesurroundingshrubberywithitsspikeofresplendentflowers,likearedflaghangingunfoldedalongitsstaff.
Thewholeregion,however,isnotofthischaracter.Therearestretchesofgreaterfertility;whereablackcalcareousearthgivesnourishmenttotreesoftallergrowth,andmoreluxuriantfoliage.
