Thisisso,evenwhenthepartiesarewellknown,andofrespectablestandinginsociety.Whentheduellistsareofhumbleposition—or,asisoftenthecase,strangersintheplace—asingledaymaysufficetodoomtheirachievementtooblivion;todwellonlyinthememoryofthecombatantwhohassurvivedit—ofteneronethanboth—andperhapssomeill-starredspectator,whohasbeenboredbyabullet,orreceivedtheslashofaknife,notdesignedforhim.
MorethanoncehaveIbeenwitnesstoa"streetfight"—improviseduponthepavement—wheresomeinnocuouscitizen,saunteringcarelesslyalong,hasbecomethevictim—evenuntodeath—ofthisirregularmethodofseeking"satisfaction."
