Justthenhediscoveredthathehadcomewithouttheapparatusnecessarytocarryouthisdesign.Thecactusbranchhadbeendroppedwherehewasfirstcaptured,andwasstillkickingaboutamongthefeetofhiscaptors.Hecouldnotgetholdofit,withoutexposinghimselftoafreshseizure,andthiswouldhinderhimfromeffectingthedesiredend.
Hehadnoknife—noweaponofanykind—wherewithhemightprocureanothernopal.
Hepaused,inpainfuluncertaintyastowhatheshoulddo.Onlyforaninstant.Therewasnotimetobelost.Hismaster’slifewasinimminentperil,menacedateverymoment.Nosacrificewouldbetoogreattosavehim;andwiththisthoughtthefaithfulPhelimrushedtowardsthecactus-plant;and,seizingoneofitsspinousbranchesinhisnakedhands,wrencheditfromthestem.
Hisfingerswerefearfullylaceratedintheact;butwhatmatteredthat,whenweighedagainstthelifeofhisbelovedmaster?Withequalrecklessnessheranuptothemare;and,attheriskofbeingkickedbackagain,tookholdofhertail,andoncemoreappliedtheinstrumentoftorture!
