           Infact,hehadbeguntoflatterhimself,that,afterall,herindifferencetohimselfmightbeonlyafeintonthepartofhiscousin,oranillusionuponhis.Shehadbeenlesscynicalforsomedays;andthishadproduceduponhimthepleasantimpression,thathemighthavebeenmistakeninhisjealousfears.

           Whateveritwas,hehadlightedhiscigar,andwasapparentlyenjoyingit,withhisarmscrosseduponthecopingoftheparapet,andhisfaceturnedtowardstheriver.

           Itdidnotdisturbhistranquillitytoseeahorsemanrideoutfromthechapparalontheoppositeside,andproceedonwardacrosstheopenplain.

           Heknewoftheroadthatwasthere.Sometraveller,hesupposed,whopreferredtakingadvantageofthecoolhoursofthenightanight,too,thatwouldhavetemptedtheweariestwayfarertocontinuehisjourney.
