Prologue

           hislimbsencasedin"water-guards"ofjaguar-skin:thussufficientlyshelteredagainstthedewsofthenight,ortheshowersofatropicalsky,heridesonsilentasthestarsshiningabove,unconcernedasthecicadathatchirrupsinthegrassbeneath,ortheprairiebreezeplayingwiththedraperyofhisdress.

           Somethingatlengthappearstorousefromhisreverie,andstimulatehimtogreaterspeedhissteed,atthesametime.Thelatter,tossingupitshead,givesutterancetoajoyousneigh;and,withoutstretchedneck,andspreadnostrils,advancesinagaitgraduallyincreasingtoacanter.Theproximityoftheriverexplainsthealteredpace.

           Thehorsehaltsnotagain,tillthecrystalcurrentissurgingagainsthisflanks,andthelegsofhisrideraresubmergedknee-deepunderthesurface.

           Theanimaleagerlyassuagesitsthirst;crossestotheoppositeside;and,withvigorousstride,ascendstheslopingbank.

           Uponthecrestoccursapause:asiftheridertarriedtillhissteedshouldshakethewaterfromitsflanks.Thereisarattlingofsaddle-flaps,andstirrup-leathers,resemblingthunder,amidstacloudofvapour,whiteasthesprayofacataract.

           Outofthisself-constitutednimbus,theHeadlessHorsemanemerges;andmovesonward,asbefore.

           Apparentlyprickedbythespur,andguidedbytherein,ofhisrider,thehorsenolongerstraysfromthetrack;butstepsbrisklyforward,asifuponapathalreadytrodden.

           Atreelesssavannahstretchesbeforeselvedgedbythesky.
