Asageneralrule,themenofthispeculiarcallingareamongstthegreatestreprobates,whohavetheirhomeinthelandofthe"LoneStar."BybirthandbreedtheyaremostlyMexicans,ormongrelIndians;though,notunfrequently,aFrenchman,orAmerican,findsitacongenialcalling.Theyareusuallytheoutcastsofcivilisedsociety—ofteneritsoutlaws—who,intheexcitementofthechase,anditsconcomitantdangers,find,perhaps,somesortofsalvoforaconsciencethathasbeenseverelytried.
Whiledwellingwithinthesettlements,thesemenarenotunfrequentlythepestsofthesocietythatsurroundsthem—everengagedinbroilanddebauch;andwhenabroadintheexerciseoftheircalling,theyarenotalwaystobeencounteredwithsafety.MorethanonceisitrecordedinthehistoryofTexashowacompanyofmustangershas,forthenonce,converteditselfintoabandofcuadrillaofsalteadores;or,disguisedasIndians,leviedblackmailuponthetrainoftheprairietraveller.
OneofthiskidneywastheindividualwhohadbecomerecalledtothememoryofCassiusCalhoun.Thelatterrememberedhavingmetthemaninthebar-roomofthehotel;uponseveraloccasions,butmoreespeciallyonthenightoftheduel.Herememberedthathehadbeenoneofthosewhohadcarriedhimhomeonthestretcher;andfromsomeextravagantexpressionshehadmadeuseof,whenspeakingofhisantagonist,Calhounhaddrawnthededuction,thattheMexicanwasnofriendtoMauricethemustanger.
