           Americansworkharderandlongerandmorestressfulhoursthananyoneintheworldtoday.ButasLucaSpaghettipointedout,weseemtolikeit.Alarmingstatisticsbackthisobservationup,showingthatmanyAmericansfeelmorehappyandfulfilledintheirofficesthantheydointheirownhomes.Ofcourse,weallinevitablyworktoohard,thenwegetburnedoutandhavetospendthewholeweekendinourpajamas,eatingcerealstraightoutoftheboxandstaringattheTVinamildcoma(whichistheoppositeofworking,yes,butnotexactlythesamethingaspleasure).Americansdon’treallyknowhowtodonothing.ThisisthecauseofthatgreatsadAmericanstereotype-theoverstressedexecutivewhogoesonvacation,butwhocannotrelax.

           IonceaskedLucaSpaghettiifItaliansonvacationhavethatsameproblem.Helaughedsohardhealmostdrovehismotorbikeintoafountain.

           "Oh,no!"hesaid."Wearethemastersofbelfarniente."

           Thisisasweetexpression.Belfarnientemeans"thebeautyofdoingnothing."Nowlisten-Italianshavetraditionallyalwaysbeenhardworkers,especiallythoselong-sufferinglaborersknownasbraccianti(socalledbecausetheyhadnothingbutthebrutestrengthoftheirarms-braccie-tohelpthemsurviveinthisworld).Butevenagainstthatbackdropofhardwork,belfarnientehasalwaysbeenacherishedItalianideal.Thebeautyofdoingnothingisthegoalofallyourwork,thefinalaccomplishmentforwhichyouaremosthighlycongratulated.Themoreexquisitelyanddelightfullyyoucandonothing,thehigheryourlife’sachievement.
