           TheinterestingthingaboutmyItalianclassisthatnobodyreallyneedstobethere.Therearetwelveofusstudyingtogether,ofallages,fromallovertheworld,andeverybodyhascometoRomeforthesamereason-tostudyItalianjustbecausetheyfeellikeit.Notoneofuscanidentifyasinglepracticalreasonforbeinghere.Nobody’sbosshassaidtoanyone,"ItisvitalthatyoulearntospeakItalianinorderforustoconductourbusinessoverseas."Everybody,eventheuptightGermanengineer,shareswhatIthoughtwasmyownpersonalmotive:weallwanttospeakItalianbecausewelovethewayitmakesusfeel.Asad-facedRussianwomantellsusshe’streatingherselftoItalianlessonsbecause"IthinkIdeservesomethingbeautiful."TheGermanengineersays,"IwantItalianbecauseIlovethedolcevita"-thesweetlife.(Only,inhisstiffGermanicaccent,itendsupsoundinglikehesaidheloved"thedeutschevita"-theGermanlife-whichI’mafraidhe’salreadyhadplentyof.)

           AsIwillfindoutoverthenextfewmonths,thereareactuallysomegoodreasonsthatItalianisthemostseductivelybeautifullanguageintheworld,andwhyI’mnottheonlypersonwhothinksso.Tounderstandwhy,youhavetofirstunderstandthatEuropewasonceapandemoniumofnumberlessLatin-deriveddialectsthatgradually,overthecenturies,morphedintoafewseparatelanguages-French,Portuguese,Spanish,Italian.WhathappenedinFrance,PortugalandSpainwasanorganicevolution:thedialectofthemostprominentcitygraduallybecametheacceptedlanguageofthewholeregion.
