           SometimesIwonderwhatI’mdoinghere,Iadmitit.

           WhileIhavecometoItalyinordertoexperiencepleasure,duringthefirstfewweeksIwashere,Ifeltabitofpanicastohowoneshoulddothat.Frankly,purepleasureisnotmyculturalparadigm.Icomefromalonglineofsuperconscientiouspeople.Mymother’sfamilywereSwedishimmigrantfarmers,wholookintheirphotographslike,ifthey’deverevenseensomethingpleasurable,theymighthavestompedonitwiththeirhobnailedboots.(Myunclecallsthewholelotofthem"oxen.")Myfather’ssideofthefamilywereEnglishPuritans,thosegreatgoofyloversoffun.IfIlookonmydad’sfamilytreeallthewaybacktotheseventeenthcentury,IcanactuallyfindPuritanrelativeswithnameslikeDiligenceandMeekness.

           Myownparentshaveasmallfarm,andmysisterandIgrewupworking.Weweretaughttobedependable,responsible,thetopofourclassesatschool,themostorganizedandefficientbabysittersintown,theveryminiaturemodelsofourhardworkingfarmer/nurseofamother,apairofjuniorSwissArmyknives,borntomultitask.Wehadalotofenjoymentinmyfamily,alotoflaughter,butthewallswerepaperedwithto-dolistsandIneverexperiencedorwitnessedidleness,notonceinmywholeentirelife.

           Generallyspeaking,though,Americanshaveaninabilitytorelaxintosheerpleasure.Oursisanentertainment-seekingnation,butnotnecessarilyapleasure-seekingone.Americansspendbillionstokeepthemselvesamusedwitheverythingfromporntothemeparkstowars,butthat’snotexactlythesamethingasquietenjoyment.
