           Yoga,inSanskrit,canbetranslatedas"union."Itoriginallycomesfromtherootwordyuj,whichmeans"toyoke,"toattachyourselftoataskathandwithox-likediscipline.AndthetaskathandinYogaistofindunion-betweenmindandbody,betweentheindividualandherGod,betweenourthoughtsandthesourceofourthoughts,betweenteacherandstudent,andevenbetweenourselvesandoursometimeshard-to-bendneighbors.IntheWest,we’vemainlycometoknowYogathroughitsnow-famouspretzel-likeexercisesforthebody,butthisisonlyHathaYoga,onelimbofthephilosophy.Theancientsdevelopedthesephysicalstretchesnotforpersonalfitness,buttoloosenuptheirmusclesandmindsinordertopreparethemformeditation.Itisdifficulttositinstillnessformanyhours,afterall,ifyourhipisaching,keepingyoufromcontemplatingyourintrinsicdivinitybecauseyouaretoobusycontemplating,"Wow…myhipreallyaches."

           ButYogacanalsomeantryingtofindGodthroughmeditation,throughscholarlystudy,throughthepracticeofsilence,throughdevotionalserviceorthroughmantra-therepetitionofsacredwordsinSanskrit.
