           ThefirsttimethecruiseshipsailedintoNewYorkHarbor,Yudhistayedupallnight,perchedonthehighestdeck,watchingthecityskylineappearoverthehorizon,hearthammeringwithexcitement.Hourslater,hegotofftheshipinNewYorkandhailedayellowcab,justlikeinthemovies.WhentherecentAfricanimmigrantdrivingthetaxiaskedwherehe’dliketogo,Yudhisaid,"Anywhere,man-justdrivemearound.Iwanttoseeeverything."AfewmonthslatertheshipcametoNewYorkCityagain,andthistimeYudhidisembarkedforgood.HiscontractwasupwiththecruiselineandhewantedtoliveinAmericanow.

           HeendedupinsuburbanNewJersey,ofallplaces,livingforawhilewithanIndonesianmanhe’dmetontheship.Hegotajobinasandwichshopatthemall-again,ten-to-twelve-hourdaysofimmigrant-stylelabor,thistimeworkingwithMexicans,notFilipinos.HelearnedbetterSpanishthosefirstfewmonthsthanEnglish.Inhisraremomentsoffreetime,YudhiwouldridethebusintoManhattanandjustwanderthestreets,stillsospeechlesslyinfatuatedwiththecity-atownhedescribestodayas"theplacewhichisthemostfullofloveintheentireworld."Somehow(again-thatsmile)hemetupinNewYorkCitywithacrowdofyoungmusiciansfromallovertheworldandhetooktoplayingguitarwiththem,jammingallnightwithtalentedkidsfromJamaica,Africa,France,Japan…Andatoneofthosegigs,hemetAnn-aprettyblondefromConnecticutwhoplayedbass.Theyfellinlove.Theygotmarried.
