           Basically,it’sjustsitting.AnintroductoryVipassanacourselastsfortendays,duringwhichtimeyousitfortenhoursadayinstretchesofsilencethatlasttwotothreehoursatatime.It’stheExtremeSportsversionoftranscendence.YourVipassanamasterwon’tevengiveyouamantra;thisisconsideredakindofcheating.Vipassanameditationisthepracticeofpureregarding,witnessingyourmindandofferingyourcompleteconsiderationtoyourthoughtpatterns,butallowingnothingtomoveyoufromyourseat.

           It’sphysicallygruelingtoo.Youareforbiddentoshiftyourbodyatallonceyouhavebeenseated,nomatterhowsevereyourdiscomfort.Youjustsitthereandtellyourself,"There’snoreasonIneedtomoveatallduringthenexttwohours."Ifyouarefeelingdiscomfortthenyouaresupposedtomeditateuponthatdiscomfort,watchingtheeffectthatphysicalpainhasonyou.Inourreallives,weareconstantlyhoppingaroundtoadjustourselvesarounddiscomfort-physical,emotionalandpsychological-inordertoevadetherealityofgriefandnuisance.Vipassanameditationteachesthatgriefandnuisanceareinevitableinthislife,butifyoucanplantyourselfinstillnesslongenough,youwill,intime,experiencethetruththateverything(bothuncomfortableandlovely)doeseventuallypass.

           "Theworldisafflictedwithdeathanddecay,thereforethewisedonotgrieve,knowingthetermsoftheworld,"saysanoldBuddhistteaching.Inotherwords:Getusedtoit.

           Idon’tthinkVipassanaisnecessarilythepathforme.
