           TheGurugitadoeshaveanimpressivespirituallineage;it’sanexcerptfromaholyancientscriptureofYogacalledtheSkandaPurana,mostofwhichhasbeenlost,andlittleofwhichhasbeentranslatedoutofSanskrit.LikemuchofYogicscripture,it’swrittenintheformofaconversation,analmostSocraticdialogue.TheconversationisbetweenthegoddessParvatiandthealmighty,all-encompassinggodShiva.ParvatiandShivaarethedivineembodimentofcreativity(thefeminine)andconsciousness(themasculine).Sheisthegenerativeenergyoftheuniverse;heisitsformlesswisdom.WhateverShivaimagines,Parvatibringstolife.Hedreamsit;shematerializesit.Theirdance,theirunion(theirYoga),isboththecauseoftheuniverseanditsmanifestation.

           IntheGurugita,thegoddessisaskingthegodforthesecretsofworldlyfulfillment,andheistellingher.Itbugsme,thishymn.IhadhopedmyfeelingsabouttheGurugitawouldchangeduringmystayattheAshram.I’dhopedthatputtingitinanIndiancontextwouldcausemetolearnhowtolovethething.Infact,theoppositehashappened.OverthefewweeksthatI’vebeenhere,myfeelingsabouttheGurugitahaveshiftedfromsimpledisliketosoliddread.I’vestartedskippingitanddoingotherthingswithmymorningthatIthinkaremuchbetterformyspiritualgrowth,likewritinginmyjournal,ortakingashower,orcallingmysisterbackinPennsylvaniaandseeinghowherkidsaredoing.
