           Almostbroken-hearted,Nellwithdrewwiththeschoolmasterfromthebedsideandreturnedtohiscottage.Inthemidstofhergriefandtearsshewasyetcarefultoconcealtheirrealcausefromtheoldman,forthedeadboyhadbeenagrandchild,andleftbutoneagedrelativetomournhisprematuredecay.

           Shestoleawaytobedasquicklyasshecould,andwhenshewasalone,gavefreeventtothesorrowwithwhichherbreastwasovercharged.Butthesadsceneshehadwitnessed,wasnotwithoutitslessonofcontentandgratitude;ofcontentwiththelotwhichleftherhealthandfreedom;andgratitudethatshewassparedtotheonerelativeandfriendsheloved,andtoliveandmoveinabeautifulworld,whensomanyyoungcreaturesasyoungandfullofhopeasshewerestrickendownandgatheredtotheirgraves.Howmanyofthemoundsinthatoldchurchyardwhereshehadlatelystrayed,grewgreenabovethegravesofchildren!Andthoughshethoughtasachildherself,anddidnotperhapssufficientlyconsidertowhatabrightandhappyexistencethosewhodieyoungareborne,andhowindeaththeylosethepainofseeingothersdiearoundthem,bearingtothetombsomestrongaffectionoftheirhearts(whichmakestheolddiemanytimesinonelonglife),stillshethoughtwiselyenough,todrawaplainandeasymoralfromwhatshehadseenthatnight,andtostoreit,deepinhermind.

           Herdreamswereofthelittlescholar:notcoffinedandcoveredup,butminglingwithangels,andsmilinghappily.
