           MrBrassonreturninghomereceivedthereportofhisclerkwithmuchcomplacencyandsatisfaction,andwasparticularininquiringaftertheten-poundnote,which,provingonexaminationtobeagoodandlawfulnoteoftheGovernorandCompanyoftheBankofEngland,increasedhisgood-humourconsiderably.Indeedhesooverflowedwithliberalityandcondescension,that,inthefulnessofhisheart,heinvitedMrSwivellertopartakeofabowlofpunchwithhimatthatremoteandindefiniteperiodwhichiscurrentlydenominated‘oneofthesedays,’andpaidhimmanyhandsomecomplimentsontheuncommonaptitudeforbusinesswhichhisconductonthefirstdayofhisdevotiontoithadsoplainlyevinced.

           ItwasamaximwithMrBrassthatthehabitofpayingcomplimentskeptaman’stongueoiledwithoutanyexpense;and,asthatusefulmemberoughtnevertogrowrustyorcreakinturningonitshingesinthecaseofapractitionerofthelaw,inwhomitshouldbealwaysglibandeasy,helostfewopportunitiesofimprovinghimselfbytheutteranceofhandsomespeechesandeulogisticexpressions.
