           Nellwasstirringearlyinthemorning,andhavingdischargedherhouseholdtasks,andputeverythinginorderforthegoodschoolmaster(thoughsorelyagainsthiswill,forhewouldhavesparedherthepains),tookdown,fromitsnailbythefireside,alittlebundleofkeyswithwhichthebachelorhadformallyinvestedheronthepreviousday,andwentoutalonetovisittheoldchurch.

           Theskywassereneandbright,theairclear,perfumedwiththefreshscentofnewlyfallenleaves,andgratefultoeverysense.Theneighbouringstreamsparkled,androlledonwardwithatunefulsound;thedewglistenedonthegreenmounds,liketearsshedbyGoodSpiritsoverthedead.Someyoungchildrensportedamongthetombs,andhidfromeachother,withlaughingfaces.Theyhadaninfantwiththem,andhadlaiditdownasleepuponachild’sgrave,inalittlebedofleaves.Itwasanewgravetheresting-place,perhaps,ofsomelittlecreature,who,meekandpatientinitsillness,hadoftensatandwatchedthem,andnowseemed,totheirminds,scarcelychanged.

           Shedrewnearandaskedoneofthemwhosegraveitwas.Thechildansweredthatthatwasnotitsname;itwasagardenhisbrother’s.Itwasgreener,hesaid,thanalltheothergardens,andthebirdsloveditbetterbecausehehadbeenusedtofeedthem.Whenhehaddonespeaking,helookedatherwithasmile,andkneelingdownandnestlingforamomentwithhischeekagainsttheturf,boundedmerrilyaway.
