           Tossingtoandfrouponhishot,uneasybed;tormentedbyafiercethirstwhichnothingcouldappease;unabletofind,inanychangeofposture,amoment’speaceorease;andrambling,ever,throughdesertsofthoughtwheretherewasnoresting-place,nosightorsoundsuggestiveofrefreshmentorrepose,nothingbutadulleternalweariness,withnochangebuttherestlessshiftingsofhismiserablebody,andthewearywanderingofhismind,constantstilltooneever-presentanxietytoasenseofsomethingleftundone,ofsomefearfulobstacletobesurmounted,ofsomecarkingcarethatwouldnotbedrivenaway,andwhichhauntedthedistemperedbrain,nowinthisform,nowinthat,alwaysshadowyanddim,butrecognisableforthesamephantomineveryshapeittook:darkeningeveryvisionlikeanevilconscience,andmakingslumberhorribleintheseslowtorturesofhisdreaddisease,theunfortunateRichardlaywastingandconsuminginchbyinch,until,atlast,whenheseemedtofightandstruggletoriseup,andtobehelddownbydevils,hesankintoadeepsleep,anddreamednomore.
