           Supperwasnotyetover,whentherearrivedattheJollySandboystwomoretravellersboundforthesamehavenastherest,whohadbeenwalkingintherainforsomehours,andcameinshiningandheavywithwater.Oneofthesewastheproprietorofagiant,andalittleladywithoutlegsorarms,whohadjoggedforwardinavan;theother,asilentgentlemanwhoearnedhislivingbyshowingtricksuponthecards,andwhohadratherderangedthenaturalexpressionofhiscountenancebyputtingsmallleadenlozengesintohiseyesandbringingthemoutathismouth,whichwasoneofhisprofessionalaccomplishments.ThenameofthefirstofthesenewcomerswasVuffin;theother,probablyasapleasantsatireuponhisugliness,wascalledSweetWilliam.Torenderthemascomfortableashecould,thelandlordbestirredhimselfnimbly,andinaveryshorttimebothgentlemenwereperfectlyattheirease.

           ‘How’stheGiant?’saidShort,whentheyallsatsmokingroundthefire.

           ‘Ratherweakuponhislegs,’returnedMrVuffin.‘Ibegintobeafraidhe’sgoingattheknees.’

           ‘That’sabadlook-out,’saidShort.

           ‘Aye!Badindeed,’repliedMrVuffin,contemplatingthefirewithasigh.‘Oncegetagiantshakyonhislegs,andthepubliccarenomoreabouthimthantheydoforadeadcabbagestalk.’

           ‘Whatbecomesofoldgiants?’saidShort,turningtohimagainafteralittlereflection.

           ‘They’reusuallykeptincarawanstowaituponthedwarfs,’saidMrVuffin.

           ‘Themaintainingof‘emmustcomeexpensive,whentheycan’tbeshown,eh?’remarkedShort,eyeinghimdoubtfully.
