           Often,whiletheywereyetpacingthesilentstreetsofthetownonthemorningoftheirdeparture,thechildtrembledwithamingledsensationofhopeandfearasinsomefar-offfigureimperfectlyseeninthecleardistance,herfancytracedalikenesstohonestKit.Butalthoughshewouldgladlyhavegivenhimherhandandthankedhimforwhathehadsaidattheirlastmeeting,itwasalwaysarelieftofind,whentheycamenearertoeachother,thatthepersonwhoapproachedwasnothe,butastranger;forevenifshehadnotdreadedtheeffectwhichthesightofhimmighthavewroughtuponherfellow-traveller,shefeltthattobidfarewelltoanybodynow,andmostofalltohimwhohadbeensofaithfulandsotrue,wasmorethanshecouldbear.Itwasenoughtoleavedumbthingsbehind,andobjectsthatwereinsensiblebothtoherloveandsorrow.Tohavepartedfromheronlyotherfrienduponthethresholdofthatwildjourney,wouldhavewrungherheartindeed.

           Whyisitthatwecanbetterbeartopartinspiritthaninbody,andwhilewehavethefortitudetoactfarewellhavenotthenervetosayit?Ontheeveoflongvoyagesoranabsenceofmanyyears,friendswhoaretenderlyattachedwillseparatewiththeusuallook,theusualpressureofthehand,planningonefinalinterviewforthemorrow,whileeachwellknowsthatitisbutapoorfeinttosavethepainofutteringthatoneword,andthatthemeetingwillneverbe.
