           Thechildwascloselyfollowedbyanelderlymanofremarkablyhardfeaturesandforbiddingaspect,andsolowinstatureastobequiteadwarf,thoughhisheadandfacewerelargeenoughforthebodyofagiant.Hisblackeyeswererestless,sly,andcunning;hismouthandchin,bristlywiththestubbleofacoarsehardbeard;andhiscomplexionwasoneofthatkindwhichneverlookscleanorwholesome.Butwhataddedmosttothegrotesqueexpressionofhisfacewasaghastlysmile,which,appearingtobethemereresultofhabitandtohavenoconnectionwithanymirthfulorcomplacentfeeling,constantlyrevealedthefewdiscolouredfangsthatwereyetscatteredinhismouth,andgavehimtheaspectofapantingdog.Hisdressconsistedofalargehigh-crownedhat,aworndarksuit,apairofcapaciousshoes,andadirtywhiteneckerchiefsufficientlylimpandcrumpledtodisclosethegreaterportionofhiswirythroat.Suchhairashehadwasofagrizzledblack,cutshortandstraightuponhistemples,andhanginginafrowzyfringeabouthisears.Hishands,whichwereofarough,coarsegrain,wereverydirty;hisfingernailswerecrooked,long,andyellow.

           Therewasampletimetonotetheseparticulars,forbesidesthattheyweresufficientlyobviouswithoutverycloseobservation,somemomentselapsedbeforeanyonebrokesilence.Thechildadvancedtimidlytowardsherbrotherandputherhandinhis,thedwarf(ifwemaycallhimso)glancedkeenlyatallpresent,andthecuriosity-dealer,whoplainlyhadnotexpectedhisuncouthvisitor,seemeddisconcertedandembarrassed.
