           Fullofthatvaguekindofpenitencewhichholidaysawakennextmorning,Kitturnedoutatsunrise,and,withhisfaithinlastnight’senjoymentsalittleshakenbycooldaylightandthereturntoevery-daydutiesandoccupations,wenttomeetBarbaraandhermotherattheappointedplace.Andbeingcarefulnottoawakenanyofthelittlehousehold,whowereyetrestingfromtheirunusualfatigues,Kitlefthismoneyonthechimney-piece,withaninscriptioninchalkcallinghismother’sattentiontothecircumstance,andinformingherthatitcamefromherdutifulson;andwenthisway,withaheartsomethingheavierthanhispockets,butfreefromanyverygreatoppressionnotwithstanding.

           Ohtheseholidays!whywilltheyleaveussomeregret?whycannotwepushthemback,onlyaweekortwoinourmemories,soastoputthematonceatthatconvenientdistancewhencetheymayberegardedeitherwithacalmindifferenceorapleasanteffortofrecollection!whywilltheyhangaboutus,liketheflavourofyesterday’swine,suggestiveofheadachesandlassitude,andthosegoodintentionsforthefuture,which,undertheearth,formtheeverlastingpavementofalargeestate,and,uponit,usuallyendureuntildinner-timeorthereabouts!

           WhowillwonderthatBarbarahadaheadache,orthatBarbara’smotherwasdisposedtobecross,orthatsheslightlyunderratedAstley’s,andthoughttheclownwasolderthantheyhadtakenhimtobelastnight?Kitwasnotsurprisedtohearhersaysonothe.
