           Incourseoftime,thatistosay,afteracoupleofhoursorso,ofdiligentapplication,MissBrassarrivedattheconclusionofhertask,andrecordedthefactbywipingherpenuponthegreengown,andtakingapinchofsnufffromalittleroundtinboxwhichshecarriedinherpocket.Havingdisposedofthistemperaterefreshment,shearosefromherstool,tiedherpapersintoaformalpacketwithredtape,andtakingthemunderherarm,marchedoutoftheoffice.

           MrSwivellerhadscarcelysprungoffhisseatandcommencedtheperformanceofamaniachornpipe,whenhewasinterrupted,inthefulnessofhisjoyatbeingagainalone,bytheopeningofthedoor,andthereappearanceofMissSally’shead.

           ‘Iamgoingout,’saidMissBrass.

           ‘Verygood,ma’am,’returnedDick.‘Anddon’thurryyourselfonmyaccounttocomeback,ma’am,’headdedinwardly.

           ‘Ifanybodycomesonofficebusiness,taketheirmessages,andsaythatthegentlemanwhoattendstothatmatterisn’tinatpresent,willyou?’saidMissBrass.

           ‘Iwill,ma’am,’repliedDick.

           ‘Ishan’tbeverylong,’saidMissBrass,retiring.

           ‘I’msorrytohearit,ma’am,’rejoinedDickwhenshehadshutthedoor.‘Ihopeyoumaybeunexpectedlydetained,ma’am.Ifyoucouldmanagetoberunover,ma’am,butnotseriously,somuchthebetter.’

           Utteringtheseexpressionsofgood-willwithextremegravity,MrSwivellersatdownintheclient’schairandpondered;thentookafewturnsupanddowntheroomandfellintothechairagain.

           ‘SoI’mBrass’sclerk,amI?’saidDick.
