           Matrimonialdifferencesareusuallydiscussedbythepartiesconcernedintheformofdialogue,inwhichtheladybearsatleastherfullhalfshare.ThoseofMrandMrsQuilp,however,wereanexceptiontothegeneralrule;theremarkswhichtheyoccasionedbeinglimitedtoalongsoliloquyonthepartofthegentleman,withperhapsafewdeprecatoryobservationsfromthelady,notextendingbeyondatremblingmonosyllableutteredatlongintervals,andinaverysubmissiveandhumbletone.Onthepresentoccasion,MrsQuilpdidnotforalongtimeventureevenonthisgentledefence,butwhenshehadrecoveredfromherfainting-fit,satinatearfulsilence,meeklylisteningtothereproachesofherlordandmaster.

           OftheseMrQuilpdeliveredhimselfwiththeutmostanimationandrapidity,andwithsomanydistortionsoflimbandfeature,thatevenhiswife,althoughtolerablywellaccustomedtohisproficiencyintheserespects,waswell-nighbesideherselfwithalarm.ButtheJamaicarum,andthejoyofhavingoccasionedaheavydisappointment,bydegreescooledMrQuilp’swrath;whichfrombeingatsavageheat,droppedslowlytothebanteringorchucklingpoint,atwhichitsteadilyremained.
