           Thesundartinghischeerfulraysintotheroom,awokeher;andnowthereremainedbuttotakeleaveofthepoorschoolmasterandwanderforthoncemore.

           Bythetimetheywerereadytodepart,schoolhadbegun.Inthedarkenedroom,thedinofyesterdaywasgoingonagain:alittlesoberedandsofteneddown,perhaps,butonlyaverylittle,ifatall.Theschoolmasterrosefromhisdeskandwalkedwiththemtothegate.

           Itwaswithatremblingandreluctanthand,thatthechildheldouttohimthemoneywhichtheladyhadgivenherattheracesforherflowers:falteringinherthanksasshethoughthowsmallthesumwas,andblushingassheofferedit.Buthebadeherputitup,andstoopingtokisshercheek,turnedbackintohishouse.

           Theyhadnotgonehalf-a-dozenpaceswhenhewasatthedooragain;theoldmanretracedhisstepstoshakehands,andthechilddidthesame.

           ‘Goodfortuneandhappinessgowithyou!’saidthepoorschoolmaster.‘Iamquiteasolitarymannow.Ifyoueverpassthiswayagain,you’llnotforgetthelittlevillage-school.’

           ‘Weshallneverforgetit,sir,’rejoinedNell;‘noreverforgettobegratefultoyouforyourkindnesstous.’

           ‘Ihaveheardsuchwordsfromthelipsofchildrenveryoften,’saidtheschoolmaster,shakinghishead,andsmilingthoughtfully,‘buttheyweresoonforgotten.Ihadattachedoneyoungfriendtome,thebetterfriendforbeingyoungbutthat’soverGodblessyou!’

           Theybadehimfarewellverymanytimes,andturnedaway,walkingslowlyandoftenlookingback,untiltheycouldseehimnomore.
