           Thetownwasgladwithmorninglight;placesthathadshownuglyanddistrustfulallnightlong,nowworeasmile;andsparklingsunbeamsdancingonchamberwindows,andtwinklingthroughblindandcurtainbeforesleepers’eyes,shedlightevenintodreams,andchasedawaytheshadowsofthenight.Birdsinhotrooms,coveredupcloseanddark,feltitwasmorning,andchafedandgrewrestlessintheirlittlecells;bright-eyedmicecreptbacktotheirtinyhomesandnestledtimidlytogether;thesleekhouse-cat,forgetfulofherprey,satwinkingattheraysofsunstartingthroughkeyholeandcrannyinthedoor,andlongedforherstealthyrunandwarmsleekbaskoutside.Thenoblerbeastsconfinedindens,stoodmotionlessbehindtheirbarsandgazedonflutteringboughs,andsunshinepeepingthroughsomelittlewindow,witheyesinwhicholdforestsgleamedthentrodimpatientlythetracktheirprisonedfeethadwornandstoppedandgazedagain.Menintheirdungeonsstretchedtheircrampcoldlimbsandcursedthestonethatnobrightskycouldwarm.Theflowersthatsleepbynight,openedtheirgentleeyesandturnedthemtotheday.Thelight,creation’smind,waseverywhere,andallthingsowneditspower.

           Thetwopilgrims,oftenpressingeachother’shands,orexchangingasmileorcheerfullook,pursuedtheirwayinsilence.
