           Soothinghimwithhisartlesstalkofher,thechildpersuadedhimtotakesomerest,towalkabroad,todoalmostashedesiredhim.Andwhenthedaycameon,whichmustremoveherinherearthlyshapefromearthlyeyesforever,heledhimaway,thathemightnotknowwhenshewastakenfromhim.

           Theyweretogatherfreshleavesandberriesforherbed.ItwasSundayabright,clear,wintryafternoonandastheytraversedthevillagestreet,thosewhowerewalkingintheirpathdrewbacktomakewayforthem,andgavethemasoftenedgreeting.Someshooktheoldmankindlybythehand,somestooduncoveredwhilehetotteredby,andmanycried‘Godhelphim!’ashepassedalong.

           ‘Neighbour!’saidtheoldman,stoppingatthecottagewherehisyoungguide’smotherdwelt,‘howisitthatthefolksarenearlyallinblackto-day?Ihaveseenamourningribbonorapieceofcrapeonalmosteveryone.’

           Shecouldnottell,thewomansaid.

           ’Why,youyourselfyouwearthecolourtoo?’hesaid.‘Windowsareclosedthatneverusedtobebyday.Whatdoesthismean?’

           Againthewomansaidshecouldnottell.

           ‘Wemustgoback,’saidtheoldman,hurriedly.‘Wemustseewhatthisis.’

           ‘No,no,’criedthechild,detaininghim.‘Rememberwhatyoupromised.Ourwayistotheoldgreenlane,wheresheandIsooftenwere,andwhereyoufoundus,morethanonce,makingthosegarlandsforhergarden.Donotturnback!’

           ‘Whereisshenow?’saidtheoldman.‘Tellmethat.’

           ‘Doyounotknow?’returnedthechild.‘Didwenotleaveher,butjustnow?’

           ‘True.True.
