           TheMarchioness,insayingthesewords,broughtalittletabletothebedside,tookherseatatit,andbegantoworkawayattheconcoctionofsomecoolingdrink,withtheaddressofascoreofchemists.RichardSwivellerbeingindeedfatigued,fellintoaslumber,andwakinginabouthalfanhour,inquiredwhattimeitwas.

           ‘Justgonehalfaftersix,’repliedhissmallfriend,helpinghimtositupagain.

           ‘Marchioness,’saidRichard,passinghishandoverhisforeheadandturningsuddenlyround,asthoughthesubjectbutthatmomentflasheduponhim,‘whathasbecomeofKit?’

           Hehadbeensentencedtotransportationforagreatmanyyears,shesaid.

           ‘Hashegone?’askedDick‘hismotherhowisshe,whathasbecomeofher?’

           Hisnurseshookherhead,andansweredthatsheknewnothingaboutthem.‘But,ifIthought,’saidshe,veryslowly,‘thatyou’dkeepquiet,andnotputyourselfintoanotherfever,IcouldtellyoubutIwon’tnow.’

           ‘Yes,do,’saidDick.‘Itwillamuseme.’

           ‘Oh!woulditthough!’rejoinedthesmallservant,withahorrifiedlook.‘Iknowbetterthanthat.Waittillyou’rebetterandthenI’lltellyou.’

           Dicklookedveryearnestlyathislittlefriend:andhiseyes,beinglargeandhollowfromillness,assistedtheexpressionsomuch,thatshewasquitefrightened,andbesoughthimnottothinkanymoreaboutit.Whathadalreadyfallenfromher,however,hadnotonlypiquedhiscuriosity,butseriouslyalarmedhim,whereforeheurgedhertotellhimtheworstatonce.

           ‘Ohthere’snoworstinit,’saidthesmallservant.
