           Whileshewasthusengaged,MrSwivellerlookedonwithagratefulheart,verymuchastonishedtoseehowthoroughlyathomeshemadeherself,andattributingthisattention,initsorigin,toSallyBrass,whom,inhisownmind,hecouldnotthankenough.WhentheMarchionesshadfinishedhertoasting,shespreadacleanclothonatray,andbroughthimsomecrispslicesandagreatbasinofweaktea,withwhich(shesaid)thedoctorhadleftwordhemightrefreshhimselfwhenheawoke.Sheproppedhimupwithpillows,ifnotasskilfullyasifshehadbeenaprofessionalnurseallherlife,atleastastenderly;andlookedonwithunutterablesatisfactionwhilethepatientstoppingeverynowandthentoshakeherbythehandtookhispoormealwithanappetiteandrelish,whichthegreatestdaintiesoftheearth,underanyothercircumstances,wouldhavefailedtoprovoke.Havingclearedaway,anddisposedeverythingcomfortablyabouthimagain,shesatdownatthetabletotakeherowntea.

           ‘Marchioness,’saidMrSwiveller,‘how’sSally?’

           Thesmallservantscrewedherfaceintoanexpressionoftheveryuttermostentanglementofslyness,andshookherhead.

           ‘What,haven’tyouseenherlately?’saidDick.

           ‘Seenher!’criedthesmallservant.‘Blessyou,I’verunaway!’

           MrSwivellerimmediatelylaidhimselfdownagainquiteflat,andsoremainedforaboutfiveminutes.Byslowdegreesheresumedhissittingpostureafterthatlapseoftime,andinquired:

           ‘Andwheredoyoulive,Marchioness?’

           ‘Live!’criedthesmallservant.‘Here!’

           ‘Oh!’saidMrSwiveller.
