           Somefeelingwasabroadwhichraisedthechildabovethemall.

           Shehadsoughtouttheyoungchildrenwhomshefirstsawplayinginthechurchyard.Oneofthesehewhohadspokenofhisbrotherwasherlittlefavouriteandfriend,andoftensatbyhersideinthechurch,orclimbedwithhertothetower-top.Itwashisdelighttohelpher,ortofancythathedidso,andtheysoonbecameclosecompanions.

           Ithappened,that,asshewasreadingintheoldspotbyherselfoneday,thischildcamerunninginwithhiseyesfulloftears,andafterholdingherfromhim,andlookingathereagerlyforamoment,claspedhislittlearmspassionatelyaboutherneck.

           ‘Whatnow?’saidNell,soothinghim.‘Whatisthematter?’

           ‘Sheisnotoneyet!’criedtheboy,embracingherstillmoreclosely.‘No,no.Notyet.’

           Shelookedathimwonderingly,andputtinghishairbackfromhisface,andkissinghim,askedwhathemeant.

           ‘Youmustnotbeone,dearNell,’criedtheboy.
