           Shewentbacktoherownroom,andtriedtoprepareherselfforbed.Butwhocouldsleepsleep!whocouldliepassivelydown,distractedbysuchterrors?Theycameuponhermoreandmorestronglyyet.Halfundressed,andwithherhairinwilddisorder,sheflewtotheoldman’sbedside,claspedhimbythewrist,androusedhimfromhissleep.

           ‘What’sthis!’hecried,startingupinbed,andfixinghiseyesuponherspectralface.

           ‘Ihavehadadreadfuldream,’saidthechild,withanenergythatnothingbutsuchterrorscouldhaveinspired.‘Adreadful,horribledream.Ihavehaditoncebefore.Itisadreamofgrey-hairedmenlikeyou,indarkenedroomsbynight,robbingsleepersoftheirgold.Up,up!’

           Theoldmanshookineveryjoint,andfoldedhishandslikeonewhoprays.

           ‘Nottome,’saidthechild,‘nottometoHeaven,tosaveusfromsuchdeeds!Thisdreamistooreal.Icannotsleep,Icannotstayhere,Icannotleaveyoualoneundertheroofwheresuchdreamscome.Up!Wemustfly.’

           Helookedatherasifshewereaspiritshemighthavebeenforallthelookofearthshehadandtrembledmoreandmore.

           ‘Thereisnotimetolose;Iwillnotloseoneminute,’saidthechild.‘Up!andawaywithme!’

           ‘To-night?’murmuredtheoldman.

           ‘Yes,to-night,’repliedthechild.‘To-morrownightwillbetoolate.Thedreamwillhavecomeagain.Nothingbutflightcansaveus
