           Thetiesthatbindthewealthyandtheproudtohomemaybeforgedonearth,butthosewhichlinkthepoormantohishumblehearthareofthetruermetalandbearthestampofHeaven.Themanofhighdescentmaylovethehallsandlandsofhisinheritanceaspartofhimself:astrophiesofhisbirthandpower;hisassociationswiththemareassociationsofprideandwealthandtriumph;thepoorman’sattachmenttothetenementsheholds,whichstrangershaveheldbefore,andmayto-morrowoccupyagain,hasaworthierroot,struckdeepintoapurersoil.Hishouseholdgodsareoffleshandblood,withnoalloyofsilver,gold,orpreciousstone;hehasnopropertybutintheaffectionsofhisownheart;andwhentheyendearbarefloorsandwalls,despiteofragsandtoilandscantyfare,thatmanhashisloveofhomefromGod,andhisrudehutbecomesasolemnplace.

           Oh!ifthosewhorulethedestiniesofnationswouldbutrememberthisiftheywouldbutthinkhowharditisfortheverypoortohaveengenderedintheirhearts,thatloveofhomefromwhichalldomesticvirtuesspring,whentheyliveindenseandsqualidmasseswheresocialdecencyislost,orratherneverfoundiftheywouldbutturnasidefromthewidethoroughfaresandgreathouses,andstrivetoimprovethewretcheddwellingsinbye-wayswhereonlyPovertymaywalkmanylowroofswouldpointmoretrulytothesky,thantheloftieststeeplethatnowrearsproudlyupfromthemidstofguilt,andcrime,andhorribledisease,tomockthembyitscontrast.
