           MrBrassreceivedthisobservationwithincreasedmeekness,merelyremarking,underhisbreath,thathedidn’tlikethatkindofjoking,andthatMissSallywouldbe‘amuchbetterfellow’ifsheforboretoaggravatehim.TothiscomplimentMissSallyreplied,thatshehadarelishfortheamusement,andhadnointentiontoforegoitsgratification.MrBrassnotcaring,asitseemed,topursuethesubjectanyfurther,theybothpliedtheirpensatagreatpace,andtherethediscussionended.

           Whiletheywerethusemployed,thewindowwassuddenlydarkened,asbysomepersonstandingcloseagainstit.AsMrBrassandMissSallylookeduptoascertainthecause,thetopsashwasnimblyloweredfromwithout,andQuilpthrustinhishead.

           ‘Hallo!’hesaid,standingontip-toeonthewindow-sill,andlookingdownintotheroom.‘Isthereanybodyathome?IsthereanyoftheDevil’swarehere?IsBrassatapremium,eh?’

           ‘Ha,ha,ha!’laughedthelawyerinanaffectedecstasy.
