           Thiswasnotthegambler,ortheshadowinherroom;thiswasnoteventhewornandjadedmanwhosefacehadsooftenmetherowninthegreymorninglight;thiswasherdearoldfriend,herharmlessfellow-traveller,hergood,kindgrandfather.

           Shehadnofearasshelookeduponhisslumberingfeatures,butshehadadeepandweightysorrow,anditfounditsreliefintears.

           ‘Godblesshim!’saidthechild,stoopingsoftlytokisshisplacidcheek.‘Iseetoowellnow,thattheywouldindeedpartusiftheyfoundusout,andshuthimupfromthelightofthesunandsky.Hehasonlymetohelphim.Godblessusboth!’

           Lightinghercandle,sheretreatedassilentlyasshehadcome,and,gainingherownroomoncemore,satupduringtheremainderofthatlong,long,miserablenight.

           Atlastthedayturnedherwaningcandlepale,andshefellasleep.Shewasquicklyrousedbythegirlwhohadshownheruptobed;and,assoonasshewasdressed,preparedtogodowntohergrandfather.Butfirstshesearchedherpocketandfoundthathermoneywasallgonenotasixpenceremained.

           Theoldmanwasready,andinafewsecondstheywereontheirroad.Thechildthoughtheratheravoidedhereye,andappearedtoexpectthatshewouldtellhimofherloss.Shefeltshemustdothat,orhemightsuspectthetruth.

           ‘Grandfather,’shesaidinatremulousvoice,aftertheyhadwalkedaboutamileinsilence,‘doyouthinktheyarehonestpeopleatthehouseyonder?’

           ‘Why?’returnedtheoldmantrembling.‘DoIthinkthemhonestyes,theyplayedhonestly.’

           ‘I’lltellyouwhyIask,’rejoinedNell.
