           ‘Itisaverylongwayfromhere,’saidI,‘mychild.’

           ‘Iknowthat,sir,’sherepliedtimidly.‘Iamafraiditisaverylongway,forIcamefromthereto-night.’

           ‘Alone?’saidI,insomesurprise.

           ‘Oh,yes,Idon’tmindthat,butIamalittlefrightenednow,forIhadlostmyroad.’

           IcannotdescribehowmuchIwasimpressedbythisappealandtheenergywithwhichitwasmade,whichbroughtatearintothechild’scleareye,andmadeherslightfiguretrembleasshelookedupintomyface.
